Chair of Country Arts SA, Mr Lew Owens today announced that regional South Australian communities have been provided with $150,090 to support arts initiatives thanks to the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund.
“In total 20 projects involving South Australian communities will be supported after the Minister for the Arts, Peter Garrett, announced the latest round from the Regional Arts Fund” he said.
“Through the Regional Arts Fund, communities are finding new ways to express themselves and their local stories” said Mr Owen.
“The current round of funding will support work in a variety of artforms from writing to sculpture to performance and film making whilst bringing communities together across regions, across generations and across cultures”.
Initiatives supported in the new round of funding include:
Feral Foods - a community project involving people of the Central Flinders Ranges contributing stories, interviews, research and film materials for a collaborative film project exploring traditions, subcultures and stories of life that revolve around foods and flavours.
Reflections - Tasmanian artists Ruth Rees and Pam Thorne will conduct workshops on creating papier-mâché sculptures as a community art project, reflecting the culture, diversity and historical development of Peterborough and District. The community will collaborate with the project artists to fabricate sculptural works depicting significant local characters and events that reflect local culture and the diversity of the local communities.
The Regional Arts Fund assists community-based cultural development in regional, remote and isolated areas in Australia. The Fund aims to achieve sustainable cultural development by facilitating partnerships and networks, assisting the professional development and employment of regional artists, and by funding community projects.
Country Arts SA manages the Regional Arts Fund in South Australia on behalf of the Australian Government. Assistance is available across all art forms for projects that encourage community participation in regional arts development.
The next funding round closes 15 August 2010, for projects which commence from 1 January 2011. More information about the Regional Arts Fund is available from Country Arts SA on 8444 0400.
