Krakouer!

Written by Reg Cribb | Produced by Deckchair Theatre Company

Directed by Marcelle Schmitz

The Krakouer magic that captured the nation’s imagination in the 1980s is set to captivate regional audiences in South Australia during a national tour of Deckchair Theatre’s Krakouer! appearing at the Chaffey Theatre on September 15, the Middleback Theatre on September 17 and the Nautilus Theatre on September 20.

Recently nominated for Best Script in the 2009 WA Premier’s Book Awards, Krakouer! follows the tumultuous journey of legendary Krakouer brothers, Jim and Phil, as they take the football world by storm in the early 1980s. Their unique and anarchic brand of football, dubbed ‘black magic,’ made them two of the greats of Australian Rules Football. Krakouer! is the story of the challenges they faced in their rise to the top of their game, their skill, daring and resilience, both on and off the sporting field and the controversy and adversity they met throughout their lives.

True legends of the game, the Krakouer brothers kicked off their football careers with the ‘blue blooded’ Claremont, propelling the Tigers to their first Grand Final in decades. In Melbourne they reached new heights with the mighty Kangaroos until injury and personal dramas undid their football careers. But this is more than a tale of football prowess. This is about two ‘brother boys’ who fought with and for each other, against racial vilification, gambling addiction, an unforgiving legal system and personal tragedy.

Mr. Rob Stobbe, Chief Executive Officer of Country Arts SA’s Season 2011 Principal Partner, ETSA Utilities is proud to be involved in presenting Krakouer! “The Krakouer brothers have remained as legendary now as they were at the peak of their careers in the 1980s”.

“This play offers long time fans the chance to relive their unique style of football as well as introducing their talent and story to a new generation of theatre goers”.

Country Arts SA’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Steve Saffell said we are delighted to tour Krakouer! in partnership with Deckchair Theatre as part of Country Arts SA’s Season 2011. “This story has something for everyone and is sure to entertain both diehard football fans and theatre goers in regional Australia”.

Krakouer! will tour across regional South Australia as part of a Playing Australia funded national tour, bringing the show to 22 regional and metropolitan venues across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia for over two months.
