Diversity in the Arts : Theory + Action
Nexus Multicultural Arts, Adelaide, 19 – 21 May
Nexus Multicultural Arts, in partnership with Kultour, is delighted to announce the National Multicultural Arts Symposium 2010, to be held at Nexus Multicultural Arts in Adelaide in mid-May. Subtitled Diversity in the Arts: Theory + Action, the symposium provides a significant opportunity for attendees to draw on the experience of experts from across Australia who are actively
engaged in the production, presentation, research and promotion of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) arts. The symposium
will include a visual arts exhibition at Nexus Gallery, performances at Nexus Cabaret and a full-day forum on 21 May involving
discussion panels and a keynote address by Lyndon Terracini, Artistic Director of Opera Australia.
Discussion topics on the agenda include:
• Programming CALD Arts
• Multiculturalism: perspectives from the past
• National Perspectives: how is cultural diversity driving contemporary arts practice?
• Cultural Innovation & Leadership: shaping CALD arts towards 2020
Key to the symposium will be the opportunity for attendees to experience live works from culturally diverse artists. Local bands
Monkey Puzzle Tree and Akoustic Odyssey will take to the Nexus Cabaret stage on the Wednesday and Friday of the symposium respectively, while the Kultour Touring Event WHO’S THAT CHIK?, written and performed by Sydney-based hip hop theatre star Candy Bowers, will be presented on the Thursday. Nexus Multicultural Arts and Kultour are also proud to present the
opening of the national touring exhibition Just Like Home by Lisa Hilli at Nexus Gallery on first evening of the symposium.
The live performances as well as the visual artworks on display at the National Multicultural Arts Symposium 2010 speak powerfully
to the themes of the symposium and are guaranteed to provoke stimulating discussion. Candy Bowers will also join one of the
panel sessions during the full-day forum on the Friday, as will other notable, influential speakers from Australia’s arts community, including Douglas Gautier, CEO and Artistic Director of The Adelaide Festival Centre, Khaled Sabsabi, Visual Artist and Creative Producer based at Casula Powerhouse, Cecelia Cmielewski, Manager of Cultural Engagement Initiatives & Community Partnerships with the Australia Council for the Arts and Fotis Kapetopoulos, Director of Kape Communications.
The Diversity in the Arts: Theory + Action symposium will explore a theoretical context for emerging cultural practices within an
international framework and will identify key emerging trends, artists and advocates. Nexus Multicultural Arts also hopes that the
symposium will connect participants and help set future benchmarks for CALD arts, while contributing to an important
national debate on the future of Australian cultural identity. A full symposium program, list of speakers and registration forms
are available online now at nexus.asn.au
