New Country Arts SA Chief Executive Officer announced

Country Arts SA’s Chair Mr Lew Owens, today announced that Mr Stephen Saffell has been appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer Country Arts SA. He replaces Mr Ken Lloyd AM who is retiring later this month after 17 years as Chief Executive Officer of the organisation and 42 years in the South Australian Public Sector.
Country Arts SA is one of South Australia’s leading arts organisations with an annual turnover in excess of $13 million and a workforce of approximately 63 full time equivalent employees.
Country Arts SA provides arts services across regiona South Australia through a range of arts programs and initiatives, which include the management of performing and visual arts venues, and the provision of grant funding which supports the creative endeavours of communities and individuals.
Mr Owens said that Mr Saffell was appointed following an extensive national selection process and is set to lead Country Arts SA into a new and exciting period for the organisation.
Mr Saffell has worked in the South Australian arts industry for over 30 years having held positions at the South Australian Museum and Arts SA prior to his appointment to the position of Director Venues and Resources at Country Arts SA in 1993.
Mr Owens said “Mr Saffell has worked effectively as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer over a number of years and has been an integral member of the organisation’s Senior Executive Team. Mr Saffell has a thorough understanding of the issues facing Country Arts SA and is well placed to support the organisation in developing its innovative programming including the Regional Centre of Culture, Local Stages and Dance in Action”.
Mr Saffell said “Having spent my teenage years in regional South Australia, and having worked in supporting the arts across the state over a number of years, I believe I have a sound knowledge of the needs of regional communities”.
“I have always been impressed by the commitment regional communities continue to show in their endeavours to participate and interact with the arts in all its forms, and I am very excited about the opportunity that I have been given to lead Country Arts SA over the next 5 years”.
Mr Owens said “Country Arts SA is quite rightly regarded as the national leader in the development and delivery of arts programs for regional communities, and together with Country Arts SA Board of Trustees, I am looking forward to working with Mr Saffell and the organisation’s Senior Executive Team in building on the achievements to date”.
Mr Saffell will officially commence in the position on Monday 30 August 2010.
